Hiring an SEO Expert: What You Should Know
What does an SEO expert do?
An SEO expert analyses why a website is not ranking where it should in Google - and fixes it systematically. This includes technical audits (crawlability, Core Web Vitals, schema markup), content strategy (keywords, topical authority, competitive analysis) and link building. The difference to a general online marketer: an SEO consultant understands the mechanisms behind the Google algorithm and can justify decisions with data - not gut feeling.
How much does an SEO consultant cost?
It depends on the scope. As a freelance SEO expert, I work on a project basis (individual audits) or on a retainer basis for ongoing support. Experienced SEO consultants in Germany and the DACH region typically charge between 80 and 200 euros per hour. Cheaper is not automatically better: anyone advertising very low monthly rates cannot deliver serious results.
How do I recognise a good SEO expert?
Three things give it away: First, a good SEO expert shows you their own rankings - anyone teaching SEO should be visible themselves. Second, they explain decisions with data, not buzzwords. Third, they do not promise guaranteed Google rankings - that would simply be dishonest, because Google decides, not the SEO consultant. Also ask for case studies from similar projects.
When does an SEO expert make sense for my business?
At the latest when organic search is supposed to be a relevant traffic channel - and for most businesses, it is. Specifically: when you see competitors winning customers through Google that you want too, or when your traffic stagnates despite a strong offer. Getting started early is almost always cheaper than correcting accumulated mistakes later.
