A few fast load times on desktop are not enough — what matters is the experience of your real visitors on real devices.
LCP: Largest Contentful Paint — Loading Speed
Largest Contentful Paint is the metric most closely tied to the subjective “the page is ready” feeling. It measures the point at which the largest visible element in the viewport has been fully rendered. This could be a hero image, a large text block or a video poster.
In my client projects at SEO Kreativ, LCP is almost always the first lever I tackle. The most common bottlenecks I see in technical audits:
Unoptimized hero images: A 2 MB JPEG in the header is still a classic. An expensive classic. The fix: serve images in WebP or AVIF, define responsive sizes via srcset and prioritize the LCP image with fetchpriority="high".
Lazy loading in the wrong place: Lazy loading is great — for images below the fold. For the hero image at the top, it’s poison. The browser delays exactly the element it should load first. loading="lazy" has no place on the LCP element.
Slow server response (TTFB): Time to First Byte is the foundation. If your server takes 800 ms before it even responds, no image preload in the world can save your LCP. A CDN, server-side caching and optimized database queries are essential here — and they also help your crawl budget.
Render-blocking resources: Large CSS and synchronous JavaScript in the <head> block the rendering process. Inline critical CSS, load the rest asynchronously, include JavaScript with defer or async.

If LCP measures the first impression, then Interaction to Next Paint measures the ongoing experience. INP captures the time between a user interaction (click, tap, keypress) and the next visual update from the browser. INP is based on the slowest relevant interaction during the entire page visit, with additional outlier handling when there are many interactions.
It was no coincidence that Google replaced FID with INP. FID had a blind spot: it only measured the first interaction. A page could score perfectly on FID while every subsequent click had 800 ms of delay. INP closes that gap.
From my work in technical SEO audits, I can say: INP is the metric that makes developers sweat the most. The causes almost always lie deep in the JavaScript:
The three phases of an interaction: Every INP-relevant interaction consists of Input Delay (wait time until the main thread is free), Processing Time (execution of event handlers) and Presentation Delay (layout recalculation and paint). All three phases together make up the INP value.
Long Tasks: Any JavaScript task that blocks the main thread for longer than 50 ms is a Long Task. During this time, the browser cannot respond to user input. The fix: break large tasks into smaller chunks — for example with requestIdleCallback() or the newer scheduler.yield() API.
Third-party scripts: Tracking pixels, chat widgets, A/B testing tools, social media embeds. Each of these scripts competes for processing time on the main thread. I regularly see pages with 15 or more third-party scripts. The honest question is: do you really need all of them on every page?
CLS: Cumulative Layout Shift — Visual Stability
Cumulative Layout Shift is the metric every user knows without knowing its name: you’re about to click a button, but suddenly everything shifts down because an image or ad loaded late. Welcome to layout shift.
CLS differs fundamentally from LCP and INP: it’s not a time value in milliseconds or seconds. The score is calculated by multiplying the area of the shifted element by the distance of the shift. Only unexpected shifts count — when a user clicks an accordion button and content opens, that’s expected behavior and doesn’t factor into CLS.
The classic CLS culprits I see most often in my practice:
Images and videos without dimensions: If you don’t specify width and height attributes in HTML (or don’t use CSS aspect-ratio), the browser can’t reserve space. The element loads → everything shifts. Fix: always set explicit dimensions.
Web fonts with flash effect: The browser shows the fallback font first, then the web font kicks in — with a different line height. Result: text shifts. Use font-display: swap or better yet font-display: optional, and match fallback and web font metrics via size-adjust.
Dynamically injected content: Cookie banners pushing content down. Ad slots without reserved height. Lazy-loaded teaser lists. The solution is always the same: reserve space before the content loads.
Measuring and Evaluating Core Web Vitals
The most common mistake I see: teams optimize for weeks until Lighthouse shows 100/100 — and then wonder why Search Console still shows orange or red values. The reason is the distinction between Lab Data and Field Data.
Lab Data is measured under controlled conditions: simulated device, simulated network speed, a single page load. Lighthouse, WebPageTest and the lab section in PageSpeed Insights deliver lab data. It’s ideal for identifying causes — but it says nothing about your real users’ experience.
Field Data comes from real Chrome users and is aggregated in the Chrome UX Report (CrUX). Search Console, the field data section in PageSpeed Insights and tools like DebugBear or Treo access this data. Field data reflects reality: different devices, different networks, different usage patterns.
Key measurement tools at a glance: Google Search Console shows the CWV report under “User Experience” — grouped by status and metric, based on CrUX data over a rolling 28-day window. PageSpeed Insights combines lab and field data for individual URLs. Chrome DevTools is suited for profiling INP (Performance tab → record interactions). Core Web Vitals and SEO: How Strong Is the Ranking Impact?
Let’s be honest: Core Web Vitals alone won’t catapult any page to position 1. Google itself emphasized when introducing the Page Experience Update that relevance, content quality and demonstrable E-E-A-T remain the primary factors. But: in an environment where content quality among competitors is often closely matched, page experience becomes the differentiating signal.
From my work as a Product Developer at iGaming.com — an environment with extreme competition for top positions — I see the effect concretely: pages with consistently green CWV values show, based on analyses to date, more stable rankings and higher resilience against core update fluctuations. Optimization: The Right Workflow
The mistake I see most often in practice: teams jump on the metric with the worst score without understanding the dependencies. TTFB is the foundation for LCP. LCP determines when the user perceives the page as “loaded.” INP determines whether the interaction afterward feels smooth. CLS is typically the quickest to fix and delivers immediate UX improvements.
Step 1: Search Console as your starting point. Open the Core Web Vitals report and filter by mobile devices. Identify which metric is failing and which URL groups are affected. URL groups are the key — they show you which templates have problems.
Step 2: Test representative URLs. Take one representative page per affected URL group and analyze it in PageSpeed Insights. Pay attention to the field data section (not lab). If field data is available, it shows you the real INP, LCP and CLS.
Step 3: Identify the LCP element. In PageSpeed Insights, you can see which element was identified as LCP. Is it an image? Then check: format, size, preload, fetchpriority. Is it text? Then check: font loading strategy, critical CSS, TTFB.
Step 4: Profile INP in DevTools. Open Chrome DevTools → Performance tab → start a recording → interact with the page → stop. Look for long tasks (> 50 ms) and identify which scripts are blocking the main thread.
Step 5: Visually check CLS. Load the page in throttled mode (Slow 3G in DevTools) and observe where elements jump. Often, setting image dimensions and providing fixed container heights for dynamic content is sufficient.
Step 6: Monitor validation. CrUX uses a rolling 28-day window — improvements therefore become visible gradually, not exactly after 28 days. Use the “Validate fix” button in Search Console to manually trigger the validation process. For pages with higher traffic, effects are visible sooner.
